“Matt is one of the most powerful storytellers I have ever heard. He has a level of humility that enables him to achieve a very high degree of emotional connection with his audience.”

The problem

You’re already visible. It isn’t turning into funding.

Most of the charities I work with have had the press coverage, the minister’s visit, the post that travelled. Then very little changed, because nobody told the story behind the moment, or it was told in a way that brought in the wrong kind of funding. I run a charity myself, so I know the meeting where a trustee asks what it all achieved. My job is to make sure you’ve got an answer people can see.

Seen

Coverage, a visit, a post that travelled. Most charities stop here.

Known

People understand what changed, and for whom.

Trusted

Funders believe the outcomes are real.

Funded

Someone commits to what happens next.

Selected work

The work behind a night of outreach.

A night on Agar Street with NishkamSWAT volunteers, who bring food and supplies to people sleeping rough in central London, and a day at their headquarters, where everything is sorted and packed. They use the photographs as evidence of their outcomes and impact, in funding bids and across their communications.

A plan, with consent

You and I agree who and what to photograph. Everyone in front of the camera knows how their image will be used, and can say no. Where someone could be put at risk, I plan how to show the work without showing them.

About

Social impact storytelling, with people at the centre.

For charities, funders and CSR teams

I’m Matt Mahmood-Ogston, a London-based social impact storyteller and documentary photographer, and the founder and CEO of the Naz and Matt Foundation. I work with charities, funders, social impact teams and CSR leads who need to show what their work changes, not just that it happened.

That might be a documentary photography commission, a storytelling project that turns your outcomes into case studies funders can use, a workshop that helps your team find and tell stories with consent, or a keynote for your conference or away day.

Dignity before polish

Social impact storytelling connects the change an organisation makes with the people who live it. I photograph people as they are, plan every shoot around consent, and think about how each image will be used long after the day itself.

I’ve run a charity for more than 12 years, so I know what trustees, funders and supporters need to see. My work has been covered by more than 200 media outlets, I’ve given more than 90 talks and workshops, and my Channel 4 documentary My God, I’m Queer won Best TV Programme at the Asian Media Awards.
