Parents who show up.

After the tragic death of my fiancé, Naz, in 2014, I set up the Naz and Matt Foundation. It supports LGBTQI+ people affected by honour-based abuse, forced marriage and conversion practices, and works with religious and culturally conservative parents to help them accept their children. The Foundation is a founding member of the Ban Conversion Practices Coalition, and campaigns for a ban that protects trans and non-binary people too. When trans people took their protest to Parliament Square, we went to stand with them.

The approach

Let the signs do the talking.

Many of the people the Foundation supports can't be shown. A protest is different: people come to be seen. Some held their signs up to the camera and looked straight down the lens. Others hid behind the cardboard and let the words speak for them. I photographed both, and kept the focus on what people came to say.

03

What it made possible

Pictures that change minds.

The Foundation used the photographs online to campaign and to influence public opinion. They show the people a policy debate is about: trans people, the parents who love them, and the faith communities they belong to.
